South 32

Johannesburg / Melrose Arch

South 32, a mining and metals company awarded the build component of their office refurbishment to Trend Group. Design Paper was commissioned to design the Johannesburg office leveraging off their success of the Singapore office.

Following Covid 19, the company engaged in an in-depth staff survey to ensure the Global Workplace strategy could be adapted to local requirements. The new strategy of flexible and agile workstyles amounted to South 32’s existing space to be substantially reduced and therefore consolidated from 3 levels to a single floor plate of 2400m2.

The reception is beautifully and thoughtfully designed with particular focus on the furniture which was selected by Design Paper. With the natural light and neutral finishes, the statement furniture pieces, and art really shine brightly within the space.

In conjunction to the reception is a large multipurpose room, a 60 person highly functional breakout space fully equipped with USB points capable of being used as secondary work points. A wellness room, parents’ room, and combined front and back of house meeting rooms complete this space.

Timber is used as a dominant material throughout the space, paired with soft illumination to add warmth to the minimalistic and clean finishes complimented with thriving biophilic elements. The placement of greenery is both aesthetic and aimed at promoting staff wellness and productivity.

Quirky wall décor gives these collaborative spaces a boost of youth in an otherwise clean space. Within the collaborative meeting pods, employees have a choice of seating modality, from casual lounges to more formal meeting tables.

The exterior terrace is an exquisite outdoor area for their staff, the pergola structure was specifically imported from Portugal for this space. It was difficult to transport this piece up the floors within the building, Trend therefore required a crane to install the pergola on the exterior. The terrace accommodates 55 seats ranging from café tables to high bar tables overlooking a grassed area for games and entertainment.

The entire workspace was designed to carefully attend to the various functions and requirements of each team. Although an open style, communicative workplace, neighbourhoods have equivalent access to amenities and support spaces such as utility areas, lockers, phone booths, meeting rooms, VC rooms and wellness facilities.
