design and build
This is the newest addition to the Thrive Student Living by Growthpoint – Brooklyn Studios. This space gives students the opportunity to experience upmarket student living at a dynamic and central location. Brooklyn Studios caters for the individual needs of students from their first year to senior phase at Varsity. Brooklyn Studios is in a prime location being only 75m from the main entrance of the University of Pretoria.
Helena was appointed by Growthpoint to design fir the revamp of the building. Growthpoint wanted a fun yet mature design incorporating lots of colour. The aim was to create interesting and stimulating spaces. Helena was required to design taking in to consideration the government gazette standards for student accommodation. Helena’s design ethos was to design beyond the minimum – this meant creating multifunctional areas and spaces that can cater to a variety of learning subjects.
Helena designed spaces to spark discussion and to market the accommodation. The outrageous yellow bath is great instragammable background as well as the lumo self-motivating quotes around the building. The green room is a space for relaxing and personal time and the bean bag room is a multifunctional space that doubles up as a movie room or for presentations.
The lobby was very important to the client as he a very impressionable entrance for the students. They requested the waterfall lights and faceted façade.
The furniture was selected from a number of suppliers, some of which were ergoform, xfactor, cecil nurse and Sit in Trend.
There were a number of challenges that Trend needed to overcome such as working with the main contractor of the building to start works while they were still getting the space to a grey box. The building completion was delayed which put pressure on Trend’s deadline.
Helena thoroughly enjoyed working with Trend – shes explained that it was a seamless process with transparent communication and efficiency.
